Telepathy, clairvoyance and clairaudience are major components of psychic phenomena. Scientists have always been fascinated by the origins of psychic abilities but in the 20th century a new science called Parapsychology sprang up and began true scientific study in earnest of all types of phenomena.
Commonly grouped under the term Extra-Sensory Perception (ESP), these studies include a great deal of research on telepathy and the related phenomena of clairvoyance and clairaudience. But what exactly are telepathy, clairvoyance and clairaudience?
Let's start with telepathy. The New World Dictionary defines telepathy as “the supposed communication between minds by some other means than the normal sensory channels; transference of thought.”
Some people might call this “mind reading” but it is not. Well-trained people can deduce what people are thinking by body language and other facial or language cues but telepathy goes far beyond mere mind reading.
Telepathy is the genuine receiving of information or thoughts from another being (either discarnate or incarnate) without resorting to the use of the normal five senses.
Many Spiritualists absolutely believe in telepathy and ESP but the NSAC does not include either one in its definition of phenomena because neither one necessarily proves the continuity of life which is the foundation of Modern Spiritualism; having said that, many Spiritualists have still been among those who have studied telepathy.
In fact, the term “telepathy” itself was coined from research done by F. W. H. Myers in 1882. Sir Oliver Lodge and Sir William Crookes both satisfied themselves as to the reality of the phenomena after extensive research and examination of well-known mediums of their time.
Telepathy can take place in several different states: the waking state, the dream state and the hypnotic state. There is also a form of telepathy called crisis telepathy that has been one of the most widely studied types of telepathy and is the most common. Crisis telepathy occurs when an individual receives an impression or message from or about another person-usually a loved one or relative-who is in a state of crisis.
Around 1930, Dr. J. B. Rhine and his wife Louisa began the scientific study of psychic phenomena at Duke University in North Carolina. Many of their early experiments-similar to those done by Lodge and others so many years before-were using specially designed cards and an agent who “sends” the information and a percipient who “receives” the information. They were very careful not to allow any sensory contamination to occur between the agent, percipient and the researchers. The Rhines are generally credited with founding the new science of Parapsychology and all of the modern scientific methods for studying psychic phenomena in a laboratory.
Other scientists around the world have gone on to study telepathy as well as its companions: clairvoyance and clairaudience. Clairvoyance is the ability to perceive things without the use of the physical eye and has been recorded countless times over thousands of years.
Many ancient cultures had “seers” from whom people, especially the rulers, received prophetic information or guidance. Clairvoyance, or “clear-seeing” is very commonly demonstrated by Spiritualist Mediums who perceive images in their “mind’s eye” without the use of their physical eyes.
In fact, the Spiritualist Manual defines clairvoyance as “psychic sight” and notes that there are two distinct types: subjective or objective; which are further broken down into four additional phases, including X-Ray clairvoyance where the medium is able to see through the intervening material matter to the internal-much like how an x-ray appears.
Clairaudience, or “clear-hearing” is also readily demonstrated by many mediums who actually hear voices or music or sounds impressed on them psychically by the Spirit World. There are also many instances in the Bible of “clear-hearing” such as in Acts 9:4-7 when Saul and the men traveling with him hear a voice but don’t see anyone there that the voice could be coming from.
Spiritualists today accept both clairvoyance and clairaudience as fact and very often a medium will demonstrate both.
Many Spiritualists are also beginning to recognize telepathy because they have experienced it for themselves in the direct communication between their mind and the mind of someone in the Spirit World or on the Earth Plane.
As time goes on, perhaps there will be more validation and acceptance of these classic phenomena from both sides: Spiritualism and Science.
